MFL

Intent

At St Andrew’s CE Junior School, our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and deepen understanding of the world through the study of French. We aim to equip pupils with the foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, while embedding cultural awareness and global citizenship values. Our intent is to ensure that all children, regardless of background, have access to high-quality language learning that supports their communication skills, broadens their horizons and develops a lifelong interest in languages. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build progression year-on-year, with grammar, vocabulary and phonics taught in context and linked to meaningful themes such as identity, diversity and human rights.

Implementation

French is taught weekly across Key Stage 2, following a structured long-term plan that integrates national curriculum objectives with global themes and cross-curricular links. Each year group explores vocabulary and grammar through engaging topics such as travel, food, family and landmarks, supported by songs, stories and digital tools like Reading Plus and Twinkl. Pupils participate in interactive activities including role-play, presentations and creative writing, with regular opportunities for assessment through verbal conversations, written task, and multimedia projects. Enrichment experiences, such as whole-school French Christmas songs and cultural studies of places like the Eiffel Tower and Lourdes, enhance learning and promote inclusion. Pupil premium funding supports access to resources and experiences, ensuring equity in participation and progress.

Impact

Our MFL curriculum enables pupils to develop confidence in using French for real-life communication and cultural understanding. By the end of Year 6, we aim that children can express opinions, describe events and engage in basic conversations using appropriate grammar and vocabulary. Assessment evidence shows improved speaking and listening skills, increased engagement and a growing appreciation for other cultures. Pupils demonstrate pride in their learning through presentations and collaborative projects. The inclusive approach ensures that disadvantaged pupils make strong progress, supported by targeted interventions and enrichment opportunities. Feedback from pupil surveys and learning walks reflects enjoyment, increased motivation and a sense of belonging within a global community.
