Subject policy

Intent

At St Andrew’s, our intent is to inspire pupils to develop a deep curiosity and understanding of the past through a rich and engaging history curriculum. We aim to equip children with the skills to explore historical events, people and societies, and to understand how these have shaped the world today. The curriculum is designed to build chronological knowledge, develop historical enquiry and encourage critical thinking about interpretations of history. Through exposure to a wide range of sources and themes, pupils will develop a coherent sense of time and place, and begin to appreciate the complexity and diversity of human experience.

Implementation

History is taught through a carefully sequenced progression of skills from Year 3 to Year 6, ensuring that pupils build on prior knowledge and deepen their understanding year by year. Each year group focuses on distinct historical periods and themes, supported by timelines, key vocabulary and a variety of sources including artefacts, texts and digital media. Pupils engage in enquiry-based learning, asking and answering questions, evaluating evidence and presenting their findings in creative and structured ways. Lessons incorporate opportunities for drama, role play, model-making and ICT, allowing children to communicate their understanding in multiple formats. Teachers guide pupils in developing historical vocabulary, using dates and terms accurately and making connections across time periods.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at St Andrew’s will have a secure understanding of key historical concepts and periods, and will be able to articulate their knowledge with confidence and accuracy. They will demonstrate the ability to analyse sources, evaluate interpretations and present reasoned arguments supported by evidence. Pupils will be able to make links between past and present, recognising how history influences modern society and culture. The curriculum fosters independent thinking, curiosity and a respect for diverse perspectives, preparing children to become thoughtful and informed citizens with a lifelong interest in history.
