Reading
Intent
At St Andrew’s CE Junior School, we are passionate about nurturing a lifelong love of reading and ensuring every child is fully prepared for secondary school. Our aim is for all pupils to become confident, fluent readers who can identify and understand a wide range of text types. We focus on developing key reading skills such as inference, prediction, summarising, and vocabulary understanding, enabling children to engage deeply with texts and read for both pleasure and purpose.
Implementation
To support this vision, we deliver high-quality whole-class reading sessions that are carefully adapted to meet the diverse needs of our learners. Children who require additional support access phonics through the Little Wandle Catch-Up programme. We use Reading Plus to enhance reading speed and comprehension, with access available at home to reinforce learning beyond the classroom. Every classroom features a dedicated reading corner and our well-stocked library and outdoor ‘Box of Books’ in the MACAWS garden provide further opportunities for independent reading. We also promote a rich reading culture through events such as World Book Day, book fairs and the Summer Reading Challenge. Our Reading Buddy system allows older pupils to support younger readers weekly, and we are fortunate to have volunteers who regularly come in to hear our younger children read.
Impact
As a result of our comprehensive approach to reading, children at St Andrew’s develop strong reading fluency, comprehension and a genuine enthusiasm for books. They are equipped with the skills needed to access a wide range of texts and are well-prepared for the demands of secondary education. Our inclusive and engaging reading provision ensures that all pupils, regardless of starting point, make progress and feel confident as readers. The positive reading culture across the school fosters enjoyment, independence and a sense of pride in reading achievements.
Writing
Intent
At St Andrew’s CE Junior School, we believe that writing is a vital skill for communication, creativity and academic success. Our intent is to ensure that every child becomes a confident, expressive and capable writer, regardless of background or starting point. We aim to provide a writing curriculum that supports all learners—including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND—by developing their technical accuracy, creativity and ability to write for a range of purposes and audiences.
Implementation
To achieve this, we have recently adopted the I'm a Clever Writer programme, a structured and engaging approach that builds writing skills progressively across the school. The programme focuses on key areas such as sentence structure, vocabulary development, punctuation and planning. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, with targeted support and scaffolding in place for disadvantaged and SEND pupils. Our inclusive approach ensures that every child can access high-quality writing instruction. We also enrich our writing curriculum through regular competitions and publishing opportunities, giving children a real sense of pride and purpose in their writing.
Impact
As a result of our focused and inclusive approach, children at St Andrew’s are developing strong writing skills and a genuine enthusiasm for expressing themselves through written language. Pupils make progress in their ability to write accurately, creatively and with confidence. Our writing competitions and published work showcase the high standards achieved across the school and provide valuable recognition for our young authors. Most importantly, all children - including those who face additional challenges - are supported to succeed and thrive as writers.
